What E.max Actually Is

E.max is a trade name, not a technique. The material is lithium disilicate: a glass ceramic pressed or milled into shape, then either finished as a full-contour restoration or cut back and hand-layered with porcelain for the outer third of the tooth. That second version is where the aesthetics live. When patients say their e.max veneers looked artificial, they almost always received full-contour monolithic units in a single shade.

Where Each Material Belongs

  • Hand-layered feldspathic porcelain: thin veneers on intact enamel, upper front teeth, cases where light behavior is the whole point.

What are e.max veneers?+
E.max is a brand of lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max by Ivoclar). Veneers are either pressed from a solid ingot of it or made from a lithium disilicate core with porcelain layered on top. It is valued for high strength combined with better light transmission than zirconia.
Are e.max veneers stronger than porcelain veneers?+
Lithium disilicate has higher flexural strength than traditional feldspathic porcelain, roughly 400 MPa compared to about 100 to 150 MPa. In the mouth, however, a thin feldspathic veneer bonded to healthy enamel performs extremely well, because the bond carries much of the load. Raw strength is only one part of longevity.
Do e.max veneers look natural?+
