People Look at Teeth First: Why Your Gum Line and Symmetry Matter

When you're talking, your mouth is moving, so people's eyes go straight to it. People look at teeth number one, eyes number two, hair number three. That order is exactly why the details of smile design matter so much.

The Gum Line Sets the Frame

A big part of a balanced smile is the gum line. When you set the gingival margins, the gum line area, and let the tooth follow it, you create balance and symmetry. Get that right and the whole smile reads as even and intentional. Get it wrong and something looks off, even if the person can't say what.

When I build temporary veneers and we do the unveiling, this is often the moment patients react to. It widens the smile and brightens areas that used to look dark, where you couldn't really see anything before. People are frequently blown away by the shape, the cut, and the gum line.

Building to Your Face, Not to a Model

Symmetry has to be built to your actual face, not to a model on a bench. When I capture your full face, I'm looking at the alignment of your jaw. If I asked where it sits in free space, your tendency would be to hold it level, but everyone's jaw has a tilt. Some of it is forward and back, some is side to side, and most people have a combination of both.

If my technician doesn't have your face and just builds straight on the model to what looks level to the floor, it goes in your mouth and sits crooked. It's like a picture hung crooked on the wall. So I capture how your jaw actually sits and send that with the case, so the symmetry is right on you, not just on a bench.

All of these details, the gum line, the symmetry, the way the teeth sit in your face, are what separate a smile that looks like dental work from one that just looks like you at your best.
